Pomeranian Basics:

The Pomeranian originated from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland and were orginally a much larger dog. English breeders, are credited for reducing the dog's size and developing the many colors, however the breed still retains the hardy disposition and thick coat typical of the Spitz breeds.

While Queen Charlotte was the first to introduce the Pomeranian to English nobility; the Pom did not gain international popularity until her granddaughter Victoria returned from vacation in Florence, Italy with a Pomeranian named Marco. More importantly it was Queen Victoria who was the driving force for downsizing these amazing dogs. She decreed that the "perfect" Pomeranian should weigh no more than 10lbs. Needless to say the English breeders not only took her at her word, and started to breed for smaller size, but actually surpassed her expectations. Todays Poms are between 3 and 7lbs with 5-6lbs being considered perfect for the show ring.

The CKC standard calls for an expression that imparts great intelligence, showing that the Pom has an alert character and that they behave accordingly. This alertness makes them a superb, if diminutive, watchdog. More importantly they also make a great companion, but not for young children, showering their people with love and affection. While they are a proud little dog, they are also fun loving and love nothing more than to be in the arms of their people.
